The Bard's Tale
I recently made a striking discovery to find that many of the regulars in TGC had not yet played The Bard's Tale. I'm not talking about the one for the PS2. I'm talking about the old-school version you'd play on your ancient PC.
It's dated, but worth a look.

Dwarf Fortress
If you look up "Independent Game Developer" in the dictionary, you won't find it because it's 3 words. But if it was there, Tarn Adam's mug would be plastered right there next to it because Dwarf Fortress is the epitomal independent game.
It has the world's steepest learning curve, but it is deep and rewarding. Put your ASCII goggles on and give it a try.
