Last week, Lemondrop.com published a very short anecdote on girl gaming. The gist? Being a girl gamer apparently involves a bit of shame, either for being termed a geek or by being the stereotyped anomaly - a girl in a boy's world. I say Pfff. As if. Ashamed is not an adjective that enters my vernacular when I talk about gaming. And a boy’s world? Let’s see…
The statistics are very clear: In a survey taken by Maxis (the company that brought you The Sims and Spore, among other things), 99% of boys and 95% of girls mention video games as a hobby. Likewise, in a survey released by the Denizens of Digitivity, 44% of women versus 39% of men said they owned a gaming console such as Wii, Xbox or Playstation. Even more so, in a study of 7,000 anonymous players of “EverQuest II” conducted by Dmitri Williams, a communication professor, women turned out to be more hardcore players, logging in 29 for every 25 hours that men played. Turns out, women were happier players and less likely to quit.
